Roberta J. (probably Jane) Lowery Curtis was the daughter of Robert and Matilda Russell Lowery. She married James M. Curtis in 1865 in Lawrence County, AL. The couple resided at what is known locally as the "Curtis Wells" community in Morgan County, AL. After her husband's death in 1908, it is believed that she went to live with her children in Birmingham. She died in Birmingham in 1914 at the home of her daughter, Carrie Curtis Windham, and her death certificate states that she was buried in Decatur, Alabama.

Mrs. J. M. Curtis, formerly of Curtis Wells, died of pneumonia last night at Birmingham at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Windham. The deceased was about 71 years old and was the widow of Rev. Mr. Curtis, a minister of the Christian Church who preceded her to the grave about five years ago. Burial will take place on tomorrow.
