Noted artist of the Richmond School. Daughter of architect William S. Kaufman. Maude Eggemeyer was one of the most important female impressionist painters of the Midwest. She was known particularly for her oil paintings of gardens and for floral still lifes. Maude and her husband, Richmond Postmaster Elmer Eggemeyer inhabited a large bungalow house that she helped her father design in 1907 on the northeast corner of South 18th and E Streets in Richmond, Indiana. She suspended her career as an artist rather abruptly upon the suicide death of her husband in 1931. Following Elmer Eggemeyer's death, she moved to Asheville, North Carolina to live with a sister. Later in life she did a series of charcoal drawings of ladies and men in colonial garb that were reproduced as hand-colored prints which were commercially successful.
