He graduated from Yale College in 1905 and after spending some time in Europe and making an extended visit in Russia he was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly and was a special legislative reporter for the Norwich Bulletin, where he eventually became part of their editorial staff. He also managed a large farm in Preston, CT.

In 1911 he was appointed as a clerk to the Consular Service at Callao, Peru and was appointed Vice-Consul there a year later. From Peru he was moved to Moscow, Russia and served as Vice-Consul there until 1916.

After spending some time on a government mission in St. Thomas he was next appointed Vice-Consul at Mexico City. And then in November of 1918 he was appointed Consul at Aguascalientes, Mexico where he served until his death from smallpox on January 17, 1921.

He was originally buried in LaCruz cemetery at Aquascalientes, but in 1926 his body was brought to Uncasville, Connecticut for burial in the Comstock Cemetery.

He was the author of The Virgin Islands of the United States of America, published by G.P. Putnam's Sons in 1917.
