Dutch Politician. He studied Law at the University of Amsterdam, obtaining his Doctorate in 1922. He then began working as a lawyer and attorney in Amsterdam. Just like his uncle and cousin, he was also interested in politics. He therefore joined the Municipal Council of Amsterdam as a member of the Christian Historical Union (CHU), a moderately conservative and Protestant Christian democratic political party. During World War II, he and other members of the Municipal Council of Amsterdam were interned in Internment Camp Sint-Michielsgestel by the German occupant. After his release from the camp, he joined the Resistance. After the war, he returned to the Municipal Council of Amsterdam, this time as Alderman of Public Health and the Hospital System. In 1948, he was named Minister of War and Marine in Cabinet-Drees-Van Schaik. This was a tough position, mainly due to the Indonesian War of Independence. He saw a permanent role for the Netherlands in Indonesia and thus voted in favour of a second 'police action', which turned out to be a diplomatic disaster for the Netherlands. After the Indonesian War of Independence, military focus immediately shifted from war in Indonesia to cooperation in Western Europe against the Soviet threat. This would lead to costs of nearly 1 billion, which was unacceptable to many MPs. A conflict between the leader of the military staff Kruls and Minister of Finance Lieftinck. He was unable to solve the conflict, weakening his position. After the Korean War broke out, he did still not come up with a solution to the conflict, leading parliament to criticise his lack of decisiveness. This lead him to resign in October 1950. In 1951, he became a member of the Council of State, a position he held until his death in 1960.
