ANNANDALE, Va - Word has been received of the death of Ambassador Julian M. Niemczyk, 89, Annandale, Va.

Funeral will be at a later date.

Mr. Niemczyk died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009.

Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery under direction of Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home Farifax, Va.

He was born Aug. 26, 1920, at Fort Sill, to Martin and Gertrude Niemczyk. He attended Cameron University and University of Oklahoma. He was the United States Ambassador to Czechoslovakia from 1986 to 1989 and served in the Air Force for 32 years. He served during World War II in China and Burma. He later was stationed in Manila, Warsaw and Prague. He was inducted into the Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame at Fort Sill. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Defense Commendation Medal. From 1983 to 1986 he was Chief Executive of People to People International, an educational exchange program, founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was a member of the Council of American Ambassadors, The Knights of Columbus, and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. He and his wife, Margaret McCann Niemczyk were married for 63 years.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; nephews: James Niemczyk, Lawton; and Gary Niemczyk, San Francisco, a brother-in-law, James McCann, Drexel Hill, Pa.; and many other nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Martin Neimczyk; and his parents.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, Fairfax, Va.
