Alfred was the fourth of the five currently known children of Frank and Amelia Clayton. In 1910, he and his three older siblings appear with his widowed father in Shell Creek, Boone, Nebraska. It appears that the following year, all five children had been placed in an orphanage in Lincoln county, South Dakota.

Per his niece, Sharon Clayton Yates, these children were ultimately relocated to an orphanage in Beatrice, Nebraska. Their father, Frank, remarried, and he, his wife, and their three children; Ernest, Rose, and Violet; were residing in Fullerton, Nance, Nebraska in 1930 with the Enoch Halverson family.

NOTE: Violet's obits says predeceased by 6 brothers and two sisters with sister, Rose, as the only sibling apparently still living. That means 10 total children (4 girls and 6 boys), and some of them half siblings with same father.

Siblings:
Anna A. Clayton Temple (1900 - 1969)**
Elmer R. Clayton (1901 - 1987)**
Alfred R. Clayton (1907 - 1973)**
Frank M. Clayton (1909 - 1997)**
Ernest Edward Clayton (1913 - 2004)**
Rose E. Clayton Shaffer (1922 - 2011)**
Violet Mae Clayton Cain (1929 - 2011)

Mary, b ca 1896-97, is the 4th sister.
2 brothers are remaining

Son:

Clarence Ralph Clayton, b May 15, 1940 at Fremont Nebraska and d Sunday, September 26, 2010 at his home in LaCygne, Kansas. Survived by 5 daughters, 17 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. Clarence’s wishes were to be cremated and a private family burial will be held at a later date.

NOTE: According to son, Raymond's, obituary, Alfred and Hazel had 7 boys and 3 girls.

Per Sharon Clayton Yates, "The youngest child Charles born 1952 in Fremont NE was adopted out and completely changed his name and no contact with his birth family."

I am unsure if the obituary entry is inclusive of Charles, whereby he may be an 11th child.
