Charles S. Landers died at his home on East Main Street at 1:30 o'clock this morning the cause of death being heart failure following an operation for appendicitis. The operation was performed Tuesday night and he rallied and grow stronger yesterday but about 11:30 o'clock last night there was a change for the worse. He had been sick only since Saturday. It is thought the sickness was brought on by overexertion at golf.
Charles S. Landers was born in New Britain June 8, 1846. He attended this common schools entering the High school in 1860. The following year he went to Williston seminary at East Hampton and in 1862 entered the manufacturing business. He was connected with the Landers, Frary & Clark company manufacturers of cutlery and was at the head of the concern at the time of his death.
In addition to his connection with the Landers, Frary & Co, he was president of the North & Judd Manufacturing company, a director of the New Britain National bank and also of the Savings bank, a director of the New Britain institute, a director of the New Britain hospital, vice president of the YMCA, and a member of the New Britain club and at one time its presiden.t He was a prominent member of the South Congregational church and was interested in the City mission. He was a prominent member of the American Protective Tariff league.
He was the son of George M Landers. His father was a life-long Democrat while he himself was prominent in the Republican party of New Britain and the state for many years. He was a member of the Republican state central committee in 1884 but since that time had refused to accept office.
He married in 1869, Grace Judd, the only daughter of Lorin F Judd of New Britain. He leaves a son, George M Landers.
