In August 1872 he was elected to the Legislature of N.C. as a Democrat, re-elected in 1874 and 1876. 1884 elected to the State Senate. U.S. Consul General in Panama, 1897 to 1905. Justice of the Canal Zone Supreme Court, 1905 to 1914.
