Melvin was born April 20, 1954, in Traverse City, the son of Nicholas J. Wilson Sr. and Elsie I. Marks.
Melvin was a former two-term Tribal Council member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. He worked construction and also at the casinos for many years. Melvin was active in Tribal fishing and enjoyed all sports particularly football and bowling. Melvin absolutely loved the game of basketball.
He was affectionately known as "Uncle Mel" to his family and many friends and will be greatly missed.
Melvin is survived by his companion of many years, Lena Smith; sons, Josh Wilson, John Wilson, and Bryan Smith; brothers, Eugene Wilson, William Wilson, Matthew Boyer, Greg Peplow, Luke Coleman, Greg Fish, Matthew Boyigan, Ross Wyatt; sisters, Christine Wilson and Amy LaCross; many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son Melvin Jr. brothers, Leonard Wilson, Clifford Wilson, Nicholas Wilson Jr. and infant brother Daniel; and sister, Lillian Wilson.
Visitation will be today, Oct. 12, from 1 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., with a wake service at 7 p.m. at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. The traditional sacred fire will be at Melvin's home.
The Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the Kewadin Indian Mission Church Tabernacle, Kewadin. Burial will follow in Kewadin Indian Mission Cemetery. The Rev. Thomas H. John will officiate.
