CHARTER OAK, Iowa -- Murlyn Aronons, 86, of Denison, Iowa, formerly of Charter Oak, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010, at Denison Care Center.

Services were Friday at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Burial was in St. Paul's Cemetery.

Murlyn Junior Aronson was born July 30, 1924, the son of Fred and Carolina Bockelmann Aronson. He died on Sunday, September 5, 2010, at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-six.

Murlyn was born on a farm in Willow Township near Charter Oak, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ on August 24, 1924, and confirmed on April 10, 1938, at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. He began his education in a rural school near his home and went on to attend St. John's Lutheran School and Charter Oak Community High School where he graduated in 1942. After graduation he worked on his family farm and began his lifelong career in farming. On August 15, 1949, Murlyn was united in marriage to LaMae Johannsen at the Lutheran Parsonage in Hastings, Nebraska. The couple settled on the family farm near Charter Oak and they were blessed with the birth of three daughters.

Murlyn and LaMae were devoted farmers. Even after they moved into Charter Oak, Murlyn and LaMae would be seen working on their farm almost every day. In 2001 he was presented with an Iowa Century Farm Award. Murlyn had also served as Charter Oak Township Trustee. During his leisure time, Murlyn enjoyed being with his family and for many years valued spending time with friends at a weekly breakfast date.

Murlyn attended St. John Lutheran Church his entire life. As an active member he served in various positions including Vice President, Treasurer, Elder, Usher and on the Board of Education. Murlyn was very involved in Lutheran Laymen's League (LLL) and had many fond memories of decorating and driving the LLL float in local parades.

Murlyn was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Lena Aronson; his wife, LaMae; LaMae's parents, Carl and Hula Johannsen; two daughters, Sandra Lawson and Devie Aronson; and one sister, La Vaun Kroll and her husband, Elmer. Survivors include one daughter, Wendy and her husband, Leon; son-in-law, Herman; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren: Amy and Nick and daughters, Sophia and Claire; Jason and Jessica and daughter, Avary; Angela and Bill; Jackie and Bradley and son, Niles; Jeremy and Colleen and son, Henry; Joshua; Rev. Timothy and Ruth; two sisters-in-law: Elfie and Gladys; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 10, 2010, at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Richard Merrill and Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the service and graveside rites at St. Paul's Cemetery in Charter Oak. Organist Marjorie Neddermeyer provided accompaniment for congregational hymns, "Amazing Grace," "Rock of Ages" and "I'm But a Stranger Here." Honorary pallbearers were Sophia Schumacher, Henry Lawson, Niles Graham, Avary Maas and Claire Schumacher. Serving as pallbearers were Amy Schumacher, Jason Maas, Angela Maas, Timothy Lawson, Jeremy Lawson, Joshua Lawson and Jackie Graham. A prayer service was held at 7 p.m., Thursday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak. The family invited everyone to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by St. John's Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.
