He was the son of the late U.S. Senator Alva M. Lumpkin and Mary Sumter Thomas Lumpkin. He was a graduate of Columbia High School, and attended Davidson College, and graduated from the University of South Carolina and USC Law School. He was an Army veteran of WWII, and afterwards, began his practice of law in the firm founded by his grandfather, John Peyre Thomas, Jr., Mr. Lumpkin served in the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1948–1950. He retired from practicing law in 1989. He was a member of Trinity Cathedral.
Surviving are his wife, Willodene Rion Lumpkin; two children, Mary Holbrook Lumpkin of Pawleys Island, and Peyre Thomas Lumpkin of Memphis, Tenn.; and three grandchildren.
