He became blind at the age of two. After the death of his parents, he inherited the homestead land that his parents owned. He lived there with his sister, Margaret R. (the youngest child of William L. Adair and his wife Martha A. Brown). She dedicated her life to the care of her brother, and she never married.During hard times, the homestead had to be sold. John Gauet "who ran the store" bought the land. Later, Ellen Burks, bought the land to keep it in the family. Information from Webster County History and Families book.
