Pvt. George Dewey Coggins - Company E, 28th Georgia Volunteer Infantry. George Coggins was born Nov. 26, 1829, in Pike County, Ga. He enlisted as a private in Company E on Sept. 10, 1861. He was wounded in his left side by a minie ball during the Battle of Antietam on Sept. 17, 1862. The muster roll for Dec. 31, 1863, last on file, shows him present. Pension records show that he surrendered at Salisbury, N.C., in 1865. After the war, he was a farmer. He had to live with the minie ball lodged next to his left lung for the rest of his life and he drew a pension from Meriwether County, Ga., due to the wound he received during the war. He died on Mar. 23, 1907, in Carroll County, Ga., and is buried at the Aragon City Cemetery in Aragon, Polk County, Ga.
