Earl Raymond Van Houten 60, 1076 Cheery Lane, a prominent Pocatello electrical inspector, died Sunday near Blackfoot after an apparent heart attack. He was born August 20, 1921, in Nampa to Elmer S and Edna Perry Van Houten.

He was reared and educated at Nampa. Following his graduation, Mr. Van Houten enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served with the 2nd Marine Division in Guadalcanal and the South Pacific Theater during World War ll. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

He came to Pocatello in 1946, working in the electrical appliance business for several Pocatello companies. Mr. Van Houten was one of the first electricians to work at the AEC Site and also worked on all major construction projects in Southeast Idaho including FMC, J.R. Simplot, ISU, and Monsanto. He left construction work in 1969 due to ill health and was affiliated with the Electrical Board of Idaho, working as an Electrical Inspector until his retirement in January 1981. He was a 33-year member of IBEW Local 49 and was the recipient of the Govenor's Distinguished Service Award, the NECA Distinguished Service Award, and the SRVEA Life Membership Award.

Mr. Van Houten was a member of the Episcopal Parish of the Holy Trinity and the St. Andrew's Church and the BPOE No. 674. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was also a devoted family man and spent a great deal of time with his grandsons.

He married Mary Donna Ashton on Oct 5th 1944 at Malad and is survived by her, a daughter Arlene Wilson, Pocatello; four brothers Hartson J. Van Houten, Nampa, Gordon E VanHouten, San Kose, Calif., and Gene Van Houten, Pocatello; three sisters, Lois Gowen, Perris, Calif., Mrs. Clyde (Zelphia) Sterling, Emmett, and Mrs, Roger (Marjorie) Worley, Boise, and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters, Hazel Parks, Velma Van Houten, and Margaret Miles.

Elks ritualistic funeral services will be performed Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Henderson Funeral Chapel by BPOE No. 674, Jerry Kugler, exalted ruler. Burial will be in the family plot at Mountainview Cemetery with military graveside rites by Pocatello Post No 735, VFW. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m., at the Henderson Funeral Home 431 N 15th.
