Otto was born in Germany. His parents were August Getzlaff and Johanna Caroline. They had two boys, Charles and Gustav, besides Otto. August died, and Johanna was remarried to William J. Neuman. Together they had a son, William. Johanna and family immigrated to America when Otto was eight years old. They settled around Rochester, Minnesota. Otto married Anna Badke. They had a daughter, Pauline. Both Anna and Pauline died of consumption. On December 26, 1898 Otto, age 35, was remarried to Metha Elftmann, who was 18 years old. Together they had eight children: Henry, Otto Jr., Herman, Walter, Metha, Hubert, Frederick (Fritz), and Elsie. The family farmed near Overly, Gardena, and then Omemee on the prominent Adlai Foster farm. Otto's wife, Metha, is buried in Willow City.
