1st Baronet, lawyer, judge and anti-libertarian writer. He was created 1st Baronet Stephen by Queen Victoria. He was a High Court Judge, and presided over the trail of Dr. William Price, who was accused of burning the body of his son. He was the son of James Stephen, the brother of author and critic Sir Leslie Stephen, and the uncle of author Virginia Woolf.

He married Mary Richenda (née Cunningham) born in 1829, the daughter of Rev John William Cunningham and Mary (née Calvert). She died in October 1912. James and her were marred 19 April 1855".
