OBITUARY

FREDERICK M. BENT

Mr. Frederick M. Bent was born in Mecklenburg, Germany July 10th, 1846, and departed this life Sept. 14th 1916, at his home in Marcellus township, aged 70 years, 2 months, and 4 days.

He came to Centerville, St. Joseph County, with his parents when eight years of age, later coming with them to a farm in Flowerfield township, where he lived until he united in marriage with Miss Ellen M. Wood, of Fabius township, Oct. 23rd, 1872. To this union were born seven children: four sons and three daughters, six of whom with the wife, one sister, Mr.s Geo. W. Cross, of Three Rivers, and eighteen grandchildren are left to mourn their loss.

Mr. Bent's was a very busy life. He received his early education in the common schools of this country, later going to the Three Rivers high school, and also to the college at Adrian, Mich. For a number of years he taught school in Cass and St. Joseph counties, throughout both of which he was largely acquainted. Years ago he united with the Methodist Protestant Church, in which he had many offices of trust.

His was an honest, liberal nature, frequently helping others at a loss to himself. After his marriage he settled on a farm in the southeastern part of Marcellus township where he always lived, except for about four years, during which he was a resident of Marcellus. He passed peacefully away Thursday morning, surrounded by all the members of his immediate family except one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Pagels, of Hamlin, N.Y., who could not arrive until a few hours later.

The funeral was held at the Evangelical church, Saturday at 2 p.m., Rev. Grant L. Jordan officiating.
