Richard, the son of George L. Bartley and Margie G. Bartley and brother Charles E. Bartley of Jeffersonville IN, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on February 28, 1966 in Louisville KY. He arrived in Vietnam on June 2, 1967 and was assigned to Company L, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

A Marine patrol from Company L, encountered heavy small arms fire as it approached the village complex of Dong Phu in Dai Loc District. The initial estimate of the enemy force was eight to ten men but with the large volume of fire directed towards the Marines reinforcements were called. The two remaining squads from the third platoon were dispatched to the firefight and encountered heavy contact and they made their way towards Dong Phu and their Marine comrades.

With the enemy deploying B-40 RPG's (Rocket Propelled Grenade), M-79 fire, and using automatic weapons it was immediately determined that the Marines were facing a much large force and originally reported. An additional platoon of men was deployed and one from Company K with four M48AI tanks for support, the terrain proved difficult for the tanks to manoeuvre with two of them getting mired in the muddy rice paddies. Artillery support was called and gunships conducted suppressive fire runs on the enemy in fortified positions. As darkness approached contact was broken by the enemy who slipped away, the battle was over at the cost of five Marines who were killed in action and fifteen that were wounded. Cpl Bartley was one of the casualties, he was killed in the action as a result of hostile gun shot wounds.

Casualties:
Richard Louis Bartley
Jeffery Clark McTeer
James Robert Morris
Rodney Gustavus Pascascio
Dennis Wayne Sonsteng
