"Our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Merle Edmund White, passed away on September 27, 2009 to the sadness of his family and many friends.

Merle was born in Taylor, Pennsylvania on January 29, 1930 to Edmund and Anna Mae White. At the age of 9 months, he traveled across country by train with his family to settle in Port Hueneme, California. His mother often said that she might as well have walked across the country, as much time as she spent chasing Merle up and down that train.
His school years began at Hueneme Grammar School and Ocean View School, where he made friends that endured throughout his adult years. He was proud of his lifelong ties to Port Hueneme and Oxnard, and shared his vast knowledge of the history of the area with his children.

Merle's proudest achievements were his 58-year marriage to his beloved wife, Jessica, and his three children Karen (Gary) Filimon of San Diego, Steve (Terri) White of Ventura and Kelly White of Agoura Hills. He was also extremely proud of his granddaughters Heather (Greg) Montano of Ventura and Carter Ellyse Filimon of San Francisco. Shortly before Merle's passing, he was blessed with his first great grandchild, James Merle Montano. Merle is also survived by his brother, Dr. Arthur Robert Sam White, his sister Joan Carpenter and numerous nieces and nephews.

Merle graduated from Oxnard High School, class of 1947, and was later part of a show on KVEN Radio with Carl Kitt, on which they entertained audiences with music, jokes and skits. Laughter and singing continued to be a huge part of his life, to the delight of his family and many friends. All who knew him loved him and admired his constant upbeat attitude and generous loving nature. He will be missed by many.

Merle enjoyed a lifetime of work in the produce industry, working with Nauman Brothers, which instilled in him a life-long love of the produce industry, Santa Clara Produce and others. He retired from Florence Distributing in 2008 at the age of 78.

He assisted his wife and children in many community activities. During that time, he also volunteered for many activities, such as serving as President of the Oxnard High School Booster Club, as a member of the Avocado Board, the Lettuce Board, and as an active member of the Western Growers Association. He also enjoyed working with his friends to organize many reunions of his class at Oxnard High, the school from which his three children also graduated. Through his associations, he had numerous friends throughout the US and Canada. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family and friends, and entertaining at his home. He was always ready with a joke or a funny story. He loved sports, reading and crossword puzzles. He will be deeply missed."

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Merle's name to Ventura County Food Share. Directions are under the care of Conejo Mountain Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 2052 Howard Road, Camarillo, Ca 93012, 805-482-1959
