Udell "Del" Johnston was born July 23, 1930, in Ismay, Montana, to Andrew and Alice Johnston. He moved with his parents to Glenburn in 1937 and was reared there. He graduated from Glenburn High School in 1947 and started farming with his father near Glenburn. He entered the oil field industry in the early 1950's and worked in North Dakota, Texas and Wyoming. He moved to Douglas, Wyo. in 1975 where he worked for Anderson Oil Co. of Denver. He married Opal Johnson April 7, 1976, in Douglas. He retired in 1987 and they continued to live in Douglas.
