Edward Henry (Hank) Mercier was a farmer, woodsman and a trucker. Edward and Marion Ruth (Cox) were blessed with 13 children; of which 10 lived to adulthood: Adeline, Patricia, Elizabeth, Albert James, Ruth, Agnes Jean, Richard, Edwin, David and Peter. The family lived in Boyd, Gilman, Withee and Colby, Wisconsin.

The following story was told by Hazel A. McGowan, Pile Lake School, on May 21, 1952:
The Mercier children are the only ones whose names I recall just now. I boarded with them. There were Hank, Delvina, William and Irene. Henry came to school one morning, after collecting the animals in his traps, smelling very strongly of skunk. He was promptly sent home to clean up. William often came late since he had to churn twice a week. As he hated to miss school, he would chant:

"Come, butter, come.
Peter's at the gate
Waiting for his cake.
Come, butter,
Come, butter,
Come, butter, come."

Then Irene, who was only "half past three," came to visit one day in the fall. She was given crayons, paper, and other busy work. She came the next day and the next. Soon she was raising her hand with the other beginners and able to read the words or perform the actions on the reading flash cards. She had learned to read without any encouragement.
Hazel McGowan taught at the little Pike Lake School from 1912-1913.
