Delvina Mercier Marsh was a teacher and a principal in Wisconsin and Minnesota. She married Willis B. Marsh, who worked for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. They had one son, Willis Jr. Willis B. Marsh died on July 20, 1969. Delvina bought the home (parents) farm and maintained it as a second home. She and Willis raised excellent riding horses. Delvina retired in the summer of 1969. Since March of 1991 she has lived at St. Mary's Home, St. Paul, Minnesota. She passed away on May 30, 1995 at St. Mary's Home in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Delvina lived in the Pike Lake area, between Cornell and Boyd, and like her brothers and sisters, was born at the family farm, where her father, Albert Joseph Mercier, carved a large farm out of the wild, wooded countryside. As a child she enjoyed the excitement of the dynamiting of stumps from the land and she often trudged along beside some of her brothers to pick up the big field rocks and load them on the horse drawn stone boat. One childhood memory is of her Indian neighbors, who lived in dome shaped hogans beside a creek and made maple syrup which they traded with the local farmers for chickens and produce.
Eight of the Mercier children attended the nearby Pike Lake School. Some of those who taught there were Agnes Phelps, Eva McKay, Hannah Browning, Hugh McKeown and Mr. O'Hara.
When she was in the sixth grade, Delvina moved to Boyd, where she continued her education and was also able to receive religious training. She worked hard for her room and board, rising early to do the cleaning and laundry, before attending her eight o'clock class.
After a year at Eau Claire Normal School she asked Miss Anna Johnson, superintendent of Chippewa County Schools, if she might write a teachers examination. At the age of 17, she passed the teachers exam and began teaching at the Fitzhugh School, south of Boyd in Eau Claire County. She lived with the Graves family for part of that year and then with the John Hepflers. She remembered Mr. Graves' unique ability to locate bee trees and bring home tubs of delicious clover honey which they enjoyed on buckwheat pancakes. Her second year of teaching was at the Pike Lake School where she had once been a student. She was paid $70.00 a month. Her sister Irene, now Sister Roselda, was one of her students. For the next two years she taught at the Colburn school and lived at the family farm. In 1922 and 1923, with added summer school credits, she completed a three year course at Eau Claire Teachers College and accepted a position as a high school teacher at Owen High School. After 49 years, five and one-half months of teaching Delvina Marsh, who for the most part was able to designate her plans and follow through with them now finds herself undecided. Less than a month ago, her husband, Willis Marsh, a kind and thoughtful man passed away. Delvina finds herself comforted by the family farm house on County D north of Boyd, Wisconsin. As she glances at her husbands antiques and his horsemanship souvenirs she hopes that she can keep the family farm. Information was taken from the Country Commentary.
