Uncle Dewey had what I believe to be a hard life. He finished high school while helping on the family farm and went to work in the saw mill with his father.

When WWII started, he was drafted into the Army and served part of his time in Germany. Upon his return, he had many nightmares about his time in the war.

He met and fell in love with a woman named Janettie. She grew up in Mississippi, but her family moved not far from my great grandpa Alford. It is believed that he and Janettie may have had a child together. Despite the love that they had for each other, his parent's were set against him marrying her. He abided by their wishes and remained at home with them.

In January, 1952 when he alighted from a car in which he had been riding, he was struck by two automobiles, one of which was a hit and run. It was nothing short of a miracle that he survived the injuries that he received. The internal injuries and skull fracture were the most severe, but not the only ones. It took him a couple of years in the hospital to recover.

I remember as a child when I would go to visit my grandparents that Uncle Dewey would walk me to the store for a treat. He always held my hand and made me walk farthest from the street to protect me. Of course, I wasn't so special, Uncle Dewey did that when all of his nieces and nephews came to visit. He was good hearted.

Many years had passed and Paw Paw died. Maw Maw became unable to take care of herself and that left Uncle Dewey alone. I went to see him and he had met a woman, Vickie Marie. He told me about his lost love many years ago and said he didn't want to make that same choice. He asked me to help him marry Vickie. It didn't make a lot happy, but they all gave him his wishes and they married at Uncle Dewey's church by the house.

After the marriage was not suited for them, Uncle Dewey moved in with me and my family. I was elated to have him with us. We took him out to eat, to the movies and to visit family and friends.

Unfortunately, he was hit by another car and was killed. We lost a loving and caring man that day.
