BUTLER, CHARLETON JUNE, 81, passed away on Monday, October 19. She was surrounded by her loving husband of 59 years, Robert H. Butler and her three daughters, Judge Patricia Thomas of Inverness, FL; Deborah S. Butler and Stefanie J. Butler, both of Atlanta, GA. Charleton and Robert have lived in Orlando since 1969 and are long time members of First United Methodist Church of Orlando where her service will be held Friday, October 23 at 11:00 a.m.
Charleton was born in DeSoto City, FL and attended schools in DeSoto City and Sebring, graduating from Sebring High School in 1946. She attended Florida State College for Women which became Florida State University receiving her Bachelors in 1950. (She liked to believe she had a part in the transition from a women's college to a co-ed institution.) She was very proud of her university and was a member of the F club. She married Robert upon graduation after being courted by him since 7th grade. She taught school for more than 30 years receiving her Masters from University of Central Florida in 1976. Schools where she taught were Gainesville High School, Union Park Elementary, Oak Grove Junior High, Memorial Middle School and Westridge Middle School where she retired in 1984.
She was an active member of her church having been Leader of the Prayer Line since 1985, Volunteer with the Flower Ministry, Circle Leader for her United Methodist Women's Circle 7, and Volunteer for Senior Friendship Club. She was a firm believer in the power of prayer and served the Lord throughout her life in word, action and deed. She was also a believer in the power of laughter and instilled humor in any talk she gave.
She is also survived by her grandson, Robert S. Vitter, his wife Lara, and her great-granddaughter Annabella, of Springville AL; and granddaughter Brittany Charleton Vitter of Tampa, FL.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made in her memory to First United Methodist Church of Orlando or a charity of your choice.
