Alta Bennett Hoylman

On Dec. 17, 2006, Alta Bennett Hoylman ended 92 wonderful years of earthly life and went to be with the Lord.

She was born Nov. 28, 1914, in Donora, S.C. After graduating from Parkersburg High School, she earned a standard normal teacher's certificate from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1936. She also attended the Charleston School of Commerce and West Virginia University.

In 1937, she married George T. Hoylman and, in 1950, they established their permanent home in Gassaway.

Although Alta was a fulltime homemaker, she was also a dedicated civic leader. She was very active in the Women's Club, serving as president of the Women's Club of Gassaway, Central District and the West Virginia Federation of Women's Clubs from 1968 to 1970. Additionally, she served on the West Virginia Federation of Women's Club board of directors and the board of the General Federation of Women's Clubs. For many years, she was chairman of the local Arts Committee and was chair or co-chairperson of the Braxton County Arts and Crafts Show for nearly 30 years. She was president of the Pearl S. Buck Foundation Inc. for 14 years and a charter member and life member. She helped organize and was president of the Braxton County Arts and Humanities Council, which brought many arts and cultural programs to the county. She served as treasurer and president of the Central West Virginia Medical Society Auxiliary and was a life member of the Braxton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Multiple governors appointed Alta to state committees including the Governor's Committee on Crime, Delinquency and Corrections, the Citizens' Advisory Commission on the Legislature, the Status of Women Commission and the West Virginia University Appalachian Visiting Committee. She was an active member of Gassaway United Methodist Church, a 4-H leader for 18 years and a member of Judy's Garden Club and Elk Valley Home Extension Club.

In addition to her many community activities, she enjoyed several hobbies, including painting, needlework, photography and crafts. In recognition of her continued service and hard work, Alta was included in the book “Outstanding West Virginians 1967-70” and received the Braxton County Citizen of the Year Award in 1975.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George T. Hoylman, M.D.; her parents, Octavia and James Bennett; her twin brother, Alton Bennett; and sister, Vera Bennett Simpson.

The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers of Central West Virginia Services for the Aging and the staff and nursing staff of Hospice Care in Nicholas and Braxton Counties for all their efforts and care, allowing Alta to remain at her home until her death.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at Gassaway United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stephen J. White officiating. Burial will be in Beall's Mill Cemetery, Gassaway.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
