NICHOLAS BACKES DIES SUDDENLY
The death of Nicholas Backes, whose death occurred early Sunday morning shortly after he arose, came as a shock to the community. Mr. Backes had been active as usual the day before and had gone to confession Saturday afternoon. He was preparing to leave for mass Sunday morning when he passed away unexpectedly, his death occurring immediately when he was stricken with a heart attack.

Mr. Backes was born at Richmond, February 14, 1863, a son of the deceased Nicholas and Barbara Backes, early day pioneers of this community. His marriage to Anna Kascht was solemnized in Richmond, November 14, 1887. The couple came to Cold Spring in 1892, at which time they took up farming on the farm now occupied by their son, Joseph Backes, and family, just west of Cold Spring, part of which is now devoted to the western residential section of the village. Mr. and Mrs. Backes retired from farming in 1919 and since then have made their home in Cold Spring.

During the entire time of his residence in this community Mr. Backes had always worked for the interests of the community and took an active part in civic affairs. He was a charter member and past president of the St. Joseph Men's Society, and was a trustee of St. Boniface church for 30 years, also serving an equal number of years as a member of the local school board.

He was one of the pioneers who assisted in founding the Wakefield Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company. He served for a number of years as president and later took over the office of treasurer of this organization, which post he held for many years, being its treasurer at the time of his death. Other organizations he helped to found are the Cold Spring Granite Company and The Cold Spring Cooperative Creamery Association, being on the board of directors of both for many years. His prominence in business circles and his genial good nature gained him a host of friends throughout central Minnesota.

Surviving with Mrs. Backes are two sons and five daughters; Joseph P. Backes and Medard Backes and Mrs. Peter J. Thull, Cold Spring; Miss Mathilda Backes, Cloquet, Minn.; Mrs. John P. Ellenbecker, Mrs. Math Maus and Mrs. Ray Hall, St. Cloud. There are 29 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. One sister also survives - Mrs. Margaret Kirsch, of Roscoe.

Funeral services which were very largely attended, were conducted Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock with a solemn requiem in St. Boniface church, burial following in the family lot in the parish cemetery. Celebrant of the requiem was Rev. Al Kraemer, a relative of the deceased of Browerville, being assisted by Rev. Aloysious as deacon and Rev. Victor as sub-deacon. Rev. Meinrad of St. James was in the Sanctuary.

Six grandsons served as active pallbearers - Carl, Alfred and Daniel Backes, Richard Thull, William Ellenbecker and Eugene Hall. Donald Maus, another grandson, carried the cross.

Forming an honorary escort were (unreadable name), Fred V. Stein, Anton P. Kiess, Paul O. Theisen, John P. Bell, Alfred Meyer, Alphonse Fuchs, and Vincent Guggenberger.

Besides numerous local relatives and friends, the services were attended by many people from neighboring and distant points including St. Paul; Stillwater; Minot, North Dakota; St. Cloud; Cloquet; LeSuer; Browerville; Melrose; Freeport; Paynesville; Elk River; and Richmond.
