Prime Minister of the Netherlands. He was born to politician Gijsbertus Martinus van der Linden, Cort being one of his middle names. However, he changed his last name to Cort van der Linden. Cort van der Linden studied Law at Leiden University, where he was promoted to Doctor in Law in 1869. He then worked as a lawyer between 1869 and 1879. In 1881 he became a professor at the universities of Groningen and Amsterdam. He was politically active as an independent liberal and became Minister of Justice in the Pierson-Cabinet (1897-1901). This led to laws such as the Compulsory Education Law. In 1901, he performed the marriage of Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Hendrik. After the defeat of the liberals in the 1901 General Election, Cort van der Linden became a member of the Council of State. After a failed cabinet formation between the liberals and the socialists in 1913, he formed a minority cabinet between social, conservative and classical liberals. He was the Prime Minister of this cabinet. During World War I, Cort van der Linden managed to maintain the neutrality of the Netherlands in the conflict, despite him being pro-German himself. Another achievement of his cabinet was the end of the school struggle, equalising the public financing between religious and public schools. In the same year, he introduced universal male suffrage. However, during the next General Election of 1918, this backfired and the Liberals lost many seats to the denominationals and the social democrats. He was succeeded as Prime Minister by Ruijs de Beerenbrouck. After his time as Prime Minister, Cort van der Linden returned to the Council of State, in which he remained until 1934.
