Twp. Farmer Was Prominent in Many Organizations

Markham and vicinity has suffered another serious loss in the passing of George Cowie who, in the words of his minister, was "Promoted to Higher Service" on Saturday morning, June 17th, at his residence on Concession 7 E., Markham Township. He was greatly loved and universally respected, having given many years of faithful service in the best interests of the community.
The late Mr. Cowie was within about a week of his 54th (sic) birthday, having been born on June 26th, 1880, at Claremont, the second son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John W. Cowie. He has resided in this district all his life, having come into the Township of Markham when sixteen years old. He married Cora Bessie Ann Tran, daughter of Mr. George J. Tran and the late Mrs. Tran, who survives him. He also leaves three sons, Harold Ross, of Markham Township; Garnet Geo. of West Hill and Karl Ambrose at home; also one daughter, Mrs. Bruce Foote (Marie), of Newfoundland; and one grandson, Ross Edmund George Cowie.
In politics he was always a Liberal, and in religion a staunch Presbyterian. For many years he was a most faithful member and office-bearer of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Markham, being a trustee and a member of the Kirk Session. He was ordained to the Eldership on Sept. 29th, 1929, appointed Assistant Clerk of Session on Aug. 14th, 1936, and elected Clerk of the Session on May 12th, 1940.
For many years he has been very active in the Masonic Lodge as a member of Markham-Union A.F. & A.M. No. 87, having gone through the Chairs and was Worshipful Master 1937-38 - the "long year" with sixteen months in the chair. Mr. Cowie was also very active in the Order of Eastern Star, being a charter member of Markham Chapter O.E.S No. 155, and serving as Worthy Patron on three occasions: in 1929, 1934-35, and 1940.
George Cowie was also very active in community affairs being for many years a director of the Markham Fair Board, serving as President in 1928, and has been Honorary President for the past two years. He also served as a school trustee of S.S No 14, Markham Township, for a number of years.
He was a prominent horseman, being a breeder of Clydesdale horses which he exhibited at the Toronto Exhibition and the Royal Winter Fair, Toronto; at the Guelph Winter Fair, as well as at other smaller fairs. Mr. Cowie also acted as judge of horses at many Fairs.
In his younger days, Geo. Cowie was a well known soccer football player, being a member of the famous Locust Hill Clippers Club. He was also an enthusiastic exponent of the curling game, a true sportsman to the core.
The funeral was held on Tuesday June 20th. After a brief service at the residence for the immediate family, the
service was held in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, which he loved so well and served so faithfully, with his minister and close friend, Rev. T. DeCourey Rayner, officiating. The Church choir led the singing with Miss Barbara Stewart at the organ.
Members of the Board of Managers of the Church, and members of the Masonic Lodge were at the Church doors to form a Guard of Honour as the casket arrived, while the Elders were present in a body inside the doors to receive the body with the Minister and escort it to the front of the chancel.
Members of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star Chapter were also present in the Church in a body; and a Masonic service was conducted at the graveside, with Very Worshipful Brother James Smith in charge, substituting for the Worshipful Master. Interment took place in St. Andrew's Cemetery, with six near neighbours as pallbearers: Arthur Petch, John Robb, Bert Coxworth, Carman Wesley, John Grant, and Gordon Lunau, who had been named by Mr. Cowie for that duty.
