Sidney served as a Captain in Company E, Missouri 8th Infantry followed by service in Company G, New York 193rd Infantry Regiment where he was mustered out on January 18, 1866 at Harpers Ferry, W.V.

He was born in Jefferson County, New York, the son of Williard Ainsworth and Sarah Green. He married Licette (Lynette) C. Gridley on September 17, 1844 in Cape Vincent, Jefferson County, New York. The following known children came from the union: Sidney, Frances and Emma.
