James Ray (Slim) Carmon of Christoval, passed away peacefully at his residence surrounded by his family at 1:05 p.m. on Thursday, April 09,2009, in Christoval Texas. He had recently been diagnosed with lung cancer and the battle just became too much. He was 71. He had two endearing nicknames; Slim – because he was tall and thin; and Sonny. He will be remembered by those names.
He was born at home on August 13, 1937 in Utopia, Uvalde County, Texas to Wilbur Lexie and Thelma Ruth Massey Carmon. He graduated from Sabinal High School in 1956. During his High School career, he excelled in both baseball and basketball. He was chosen to be on the South Texas All Star team in the Spring of 1956 as a pitcher. He had a terrific fastball and few batters could get a hit when he was on the mound. Unfortunately, he did not get to pitch in the first inning which upset him, and he left the dugout before he could be seen by the visiting scouts. We are convinced that if he had pitched that day, he would have had an outstanding career in the major leagues. He was that good!
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1960 and his tour of duty included an 11 month stint in Korea. He married the love of his life, whom he met in the summer of 1957, Barbara Ann Harrington, granddaughter of Leo and Eva Welch Lacey in Camp Wood on July 7, 1960. They had over 48 years together. He went to work for Central Power and Light in Del Rio in July 1957 where he completed just over 24 years of service, later transferring to San Angelo with West Texas Utilities. He retired in 1994 after more than 36 years with the Central and Southwest System. He was exceptionally talented in his profession as a "lineman" and his co-workers say that he could climb a utility pole like a "cat would climb a tree". His other talents included carpentry. Over the years he completed several projects but the most demanding was started In 2003 when he began re-modeling an 1100 square foot house in Camp Wood. And, he almost completed it in January 2009, even though he was ill most likely for the last several months. It is a testament of his ability to excel in whatever he undertook. His attention to detail was exceptional. He had a quick smile and wit and everyone who knew him loved him. He will be missed by his family and his friends.
Survivors include his wife, one son, Curtis Ray Carmon and wife, Sheila Denise Fletcher Carmon of San Antonio; one daughter, Cathryn Rene' Carmon Calvert and husband, Mitchel Floyd Calvert of Christoval. Six grandchildren, Clayton James Carmon of Bryan-College Station, Kendall Faye Carmon of San Antonio, Kaylee' Nicole Edwards, James Leslie, Mark Michael, and Marshall Floyd Calvert of Christoval; several cousins, extended family members and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Betty Jean Carmon Robbins. He was a member of the Christoval Church of Christ.
A memorial service will be held at the Christoval Church of Christ in Christoval Texas on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 10 a.m. Pastor David Gulley will officiate. A graveside service will follow at the Barksdale Cemetery in Barksdale Texas at 4:00 p.m.
Pastors Al Sowins and C. A. Sweeten will officiate. A visitation for the family and friends will be held immediately following the service at the Hill Country Church of Christ in Camp Wood Texas.
