Earle S. Holman, 96, whose active life as a newspaper editor and community historian spanned more than 70 years, died today at Antigo Community Care Center. Holman was born in Deerfield, Wis., on December 31, 1887, a son of Nels and Jenny Holman. He graduated from the Deerfield High School in 1905, and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Wisconsin in one of the school's earliest jounalism classes. Following graduation he came to the Antigo Daily Hournal and worked as a reporter. He remained here for about 11 months when he moved to Janesville and took a similar assignment with the Daily Gazette. Holman returned to Antigo and assumed duties on the telegraph desk and wrote editorials and feature articles. He remained a full-time editorial writer for the Journal until 1959 when he entered semi-retirement. Holman continued daily editorial duties at the newspaper until the summer of 1981. He was a charter member o the Antigo Audubon Club and the Antigo Writers Club. He was a member of the Langlade County Historical Society since its inception and served that organization for years as secretary. He was also a life member of the Wisconsin Historical Society. He was an active member of the Antigo Rotary Club and served the organization as president. He was a member of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church, Antigo, and served on its vestry for many years. During his lifetime Holman was cited for numerous awards including the Wisconsin Historical Society Local History Award of Merit in 1969 and was cited by the Antigo Area Chamber of Commerce as "Citizen of the Year" in 1966. He was married to Inez Hall in Antigo on Oct. 22, 1923. His wife, one sister and a brother proceeded him in death. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 a, m, at St. Ambrose Episcopal church with Rev. David Wessell officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a. m. until time of service at the church. Burial will be at Elmwood cemetery.
