Son of Charlotte Bush and John Johnson. Served the Confederacy as a musician, the bugler for Robert E. Lee when he was stationed in Virginia.

In the 1860 Federal Census of Duval County, Florida, he was living in the Mayport District with his father, stepmother, and siblings. The household included: John Johnson, age 45, a Bar Pilot with real estate valued at $3,000 and personal property valued at $12,000, born in Norway; Ruth W, age 37, born in Florida; Lula, age 19; Charles, age 18; Mary M, age 10; Martha, age 8; Mary, age 6; and Edwin, age 1/12.
