Michael D. Hood, 77, began his immortal life on Nov. 20, 2008 in Pal Springs, Calif. Mike was born July 12, 1931 in El Paso, Texas.

He graduated from Palo Verde High School and attended Palo Verde College.

Mike lived in Las Cruces, N.M until 1945, when his family moved to Blythe to level farmland in Parker, Ariz. And the Palo Verde Valley for his father, Fred Hood and with his brother, James Benton Hood.

After serving as a radio man for the US Army Engineers in Germany for two years, he had many professions including mechanic for Honnen Machinery and I.R. Harris Garage, Blythe city policeman and he retired from AT & T in 1987 as a radio man.

Mike appreciated the Colorado River. He and his buddies, Joe Holmesley and Herb Mayfield would launch a boat at the I-10 bridge to swim and water skie and then boat down to Picacho Peak spending several days fishing, hunting and camping.

Flying model airplanes has been a life-long hobby of Mike's.

He served as President of Blythe Association of Aero Modelers (B.A.A.M.) for the last 20 years and has flown Pattern and Old Timer planes and also taught other members how to fly models using the Buddy box system.

Ham radio kept him busy first with the local Desert Waves A.R.C. and Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services (R.A.C.E.S.).

Mike also served as one of the local representatives with the City of Blythe on the Palo Verde Valley Emergency Services Committee with Butch Hull, to train and participate in disaster preparedness for earthquakes, bio-terrorism, etc.

He climbed the City Hall roof to install antennas to assure radio communications would function when our regular telephones failed.

Mike chose the City of Blythe Reserve as his community service.

Buck Ingram appointed him Captain of Blythe Police Reserves in February 1968 and he worked that position until April 1980 with Buck and reserve staff performing the duties of a regular officer such as walking beats, staking out drug busts, making arrest, et.

Mike married Velma Harris July 29, 1952. They shared a life and love for 56 years.

His survivors include nephews and nieces James F. Hood, Leslie Watson, William Michael Hood, Melissa Steidel and Patrick Hood and their families; cousins Milton and Berta Benton of Cedaredge, Colo., Sally and D. F. Stahman of Las Cruces and Australia, and Charles and Richard Hargus, their sisters and families.

Mike's wit, good humor, intelligence and love will be sorely missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Grace Benton Hood and his brother, James Benton Hood.

Visitation for Mile will be Nov. 30 from 4-8 p.m. at Frye Chapel.

His graveside funeral service will be Dec 1, 11 a.m. at Palo Verde Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
