Nicolai was a railroad engineer who helped construct the eastern end of the Trans-Siberian railroad -- both the Ussuri line from Ussuriysk north to Khabarovsk, and also the Chinese Eastern Railroad in Manchuria.

He and his wife Ekaterina were parents of 6 children.

Note that the Russian Concession Cemetery was destroyed in the Tangshan earthquake of 28 Jul 1976, the third worst earthquake in recorded history.
