Matilda Jane (Stafford) Burkhart was the 2nd wife of Calvin Peter Burkhart (1819-1907). She was born Jan 13, 1838 in Shelby, Indiana, to William M. Stafford (1840-1888) and Priscilla Jane (Ramsay) Stafford (1819-1903), one of at least four children. The family had relocated to Oregon in 1852 and Matilda Jane had lived with her parents of their donation land claim until she married Alonzo Penzen Turner on March 4th, 1858 in Lane County, Oregon. When the 1870 Census was conducted on Aug 23, 1870, Matilda, her husband, Alonzo, and their three children, James Lane Turner, 11, Clara M. Turner, 8, and Clarence Turner, age 2, were living in Idaho City, Boise Co., Idaho. Alonzo was owner/operator of a Vegetable Store. He listed the value of his property at $300 and listed cash assets of $300. Their union was dissolved by divorce (not very common place in the 19th Century) in the early 1870's. She married Calvin Peter Burkhart of Linn County, Oregon, following the death of his 1st wife, Elizabeth Jane (Doughty)in 1886. Unfortunately, the marriage was rather brief as Matilda passed from this life on Aug 14th, 1890. Calvin, Elizabeth and Matilda are all buried together and share a marble monolith grave marker at Riverside Cemetery, Albany, OR. I know they are together with their respective Loved Ones in Paradise, for Eternity. May they all Rest in Peace.

Calvin Peter Burkhart was one of 12 children borne to John and Rebecca [Baltzell] Burkhart. He was an older brother of my maternal great, great, grandfather, Leander Columbus Burkhart.
