Funeral services for Mrs. China Catherine McDuffie, widow of the late Norman Henry McDuffie, who was a prominent mining superintendent and business man for many years, were held at the residence, 731 Walnut Street, at 11 a.m. today. Interment followed in Forrest cemetery. Griffin Funeral Home of Prattville directing.
Mrs. McDuffie, who had been ill for several years, died at a Prattville hospital early Monday. She was 67 years old.
Mrs. McDuffie, who was the former China Catherine Gardner, was born on July 2, 1875, in what is now Alabama City. Her father, the late William Gardner, was the first mayor of Alabama City when that community was incorporated. She was a member of the Methodist church and was widely known throughout the county. She married Mr. McDuffie on January 13, 1898.
Mr. McDuffie, who died several years ago, was an expert ore miner and served as superintendent of the Citico Furnace Co. for 20 years before he retired from the mining field to enter business.
Surviving are one son, E.F. McDuffie, of Pinson, and (daughter?) Mrs. James Holladay of Tuscaloosa, and eight grandchildren.
