Sister Mary Antonella Boegemann, SSND
(née Gertrude Mary Ana Catherine Boegemann)

First Profession August 11, 1910
Motherhouse
St. Louis, Missouri

Beloved niece of Sister M. Imelda Gavin, SSND.

On November 18, 1888, a baby girl was born to John and Catherine Sills in St. Louis, Missouri. She was baptized at Holy Ghost Parish on the Feast of the Presentation, November 21. At the time of her Baptism when the priest asked the godparents what was the child's name, they replied, "Gertrude Mary Anna Catherine." The priest looked at the godparents and said: "Why not give her the whole All Saints Litany!"

She began school at the age of six at St. Engelbert's and completed her elementary studies there. In her autobiography she said, "I always loved school, loved my studies and my teachers." One of the happiest days of her life was her First Communion Day on June 22, 1902. On this occasion, Sister Clara gave her a small gold medal of the Blessed Virgin telling her that she must show it to her again when she entered the convent. She promised that she would and – she really did on September 8, 1907. From early childhood days she felt God was calling her to serve Him in the convent. Gertrude received the bonnet at the Motherhouse in St. Louis on September 14, 1907. One year later she was received and given the name Antonella. As a novice she was sent with Sister Liborine to open a mission at Shrewsbury, Missouri. Sister Antonella pronounced her first vows on August 11, 1910, and on July 19, 1917, she made her Final Profession.

Her years of teaching ministry were divided almost evenly between elementary and secondary levels in Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana and finally St. Gerard, San Antonio, Texas. It was also during this time that the habit was changed. At first Sister Antonella kept the long habit, but for her Diamond Jubilee in 1970 she chose to wear a blue suit.

In 1972, after a bout with pneumonia, Sister Antonella was transferred to Marycrest in Marrero, Louisiana. In September 1974, Sister Antonella fell in her room and fractured her left hip. She was admitted to West Jefferson Hospital in Marrero and underwent surgery on September 26. She died in the hospital on October 2, 1974. After a funeral Mass celebrated at St. John Bosco Chapel, Madonna Manor, Sister was laid to rest in St. Joseph Cemetery in New Orleans. May she enjoy eternal rest!
