Vernal was born April 2, 1922, in Goodhue, Minnesota, to Paul A. and Ragna B. (Lexvold) Benrud. When he was 2 years old his father died. He was raised by his mother in the Zumbrota area and graduated from Zumbrota High School in 1940. He graduated from St. Olaf College in June 1944 with a degree in Physics, and shortly after joined the US Navy. Following his discharge in June 1946, he attended the University of Minnesota and then the University of Colorado where he received his Master's Degree. In 1949, he began teaching at St. Olaf. Following his time at St. Olaf, he began working as an electrical engineer in research and development for Remington - Rand, which later became Sperry - Univac. He married Marion J. Nelson on August 5, 1978, at University Lutheran Church of Hope in Minneapolis. After marriage they built their home in Eagan. He retired in 1983. Marion passed away on December 31, 1999, and Vernal moved to the Three Links Campus in Northfield in 2004.
Vernal enjoyed listening to music, participating in Bible study, playing tennis and downhill skiing. He skied in many areas of the United States and Europe (including the Alps) and was still actively skiing well into his 70's.
Survivors include his brother-in-law, Bernard Plumb of Sun City, California; one nephew, Dale (Mary) Windhorst of Osseo, Wisconsin; 2 nieces: Adene Windhorst of Campbell, California, Elonn (Tom) Harmon of Rochester; his close friends, Mary and Daniel Milbert of Faribault. He was preceded in death by his wife, his sister Jean Plumb, and his parents.
Funeral services will be 10 AM Friday, October 30, 2009, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Northfield with Rev. John E. Quam officiating. Music will be provided by Daniel Fenn. Interment will be in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Friday one hour prior to the funeral.
Memorials are preferred to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or Alzheimer's Foundation.
