Vernie Bernes Eggers, 77, Lizton, died Wednesday, Sept. 27 (1978), in Winona Hospital, Indianapolis, following several years of illness and a broken hip. He was a retired teacher and farmer, having taught 26 years in various schools in Hendricks, Putnam and Montgomery counties.

He was a graduate of North Salem High School and Central Normal College where he established numerous track records and was a member of the national scholastic honorary, Phi Beta Kappa.

Mr. Eggers was a 48-year member of the North Salem Masonic Lodge and was also a member of the Montclair Christian Church where he served as superintendent and elder. He also was a former member of the Hendricks County Farm Bureau and a charter member and past president of the Lizton Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife, Ozella (Thompson) Eggers, whom he married Nov. 3, 1934. Also surviving is a daughter, Margaret; two grandsons, Greg Robinson and Bernie Scott Eggers. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Neva Poynter, and a brother, Orville.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Harrison Edward Eggers and Margaret Eggers. A sister, Mrs. Flossie Booker, also preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, at the Porter Funeral Home in North Salem with the Rev. Raymond Duff officiating. Masonic services were held preceding the burial in the Lizton K of P Cemetery.
