She was the daughter of Richard Philip Hart and Betsy Amelia Howard Hart.
On October 29, 1855, she married George W. Shields of Washington City at Troy, New York. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Dr. Kennedy.

Mother of Mrs. William B. Gurley Passes Away in this City
Mrs. Susan Hart Shields, mother of Mrs. W.B. Gurley of 1401 G Street Northwest died at the home of her daughter shortly after 9 o'clock yesterday morning. Mrs. Shields formerly lived at Norfolk, Virginia, but for some time past she had made her home with her daughter in Washington. Early last winter Mrs. Shields contracted a cold from which on account of her age she never fully recovered. Her illness, however, although it was protracted did not assume a dangerous form until a week ago.

The funeral will be held on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock and Rev. Wallace Radcliffe of New York Avenue Presbyterian Church will conduct the services. The interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery and will be private. Mrs. Shields was born in Troy, New York in 1830. She was married to William Shields of Norfolk, Virginia where she made her home for a number of years. She was a widow and Mrs. Gurley is the only surviving child.
