Sister Mary Adelle Carrigan, SSND
(née Esther Eileen Carrigan)

First Profession July 30, 1933
Motherhouse
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Sister Mary Adelle spent her first six weeks of life in an incubator. Her parents, James Carrigan and Frances Alberta Tormey, welcomed little two pound Esther on January 15, 1910, even as they mourned the death of her twin. Sister Adelle always claimed that she got so much rest in the incubator that she continued through life as a very healthy person.

Esther, with her three sisters, attended Milwaukee public schools from kindergarten through high school. She was always very proud of the public school education she had received. She enjoyed Sunday morning catechism classes taught by women of the parish, and as a teenager, she joined them in teaching the younger children their prayers.

At the Milwaukee State Teacher's College, Esther became familiar with Notre Dame Sisters through her college friends. Later, Sister wrote that the prayers of the sisters plus the devotion and kindness of the lay women catechists, and her retreats inspired her vocation. She entered the candidature in Milwaukee on September 1, 1930. As a second year candidate, Esther taught the high school juniors in the Motherhouse instead of going out on mission. After taking her vows on July 30, 1933, Sister Mary Adelle began her long career of teaching.

For 15 years Sister Adelle taught high school social studies in Wisconsin and Indiana. Then, as she tells it, being transferred from teaching high school students to teaching 7th and 8th graders in Green Bay, WI, put her obedience to the test. For six years, "In His Will lies thy peace" was her constant prayer. She returned to high school teaching again, in Illinois and Michigan.

Having earned an MA in Library Science, Sister became full time librarian in Menasha, WI, and then assistant librarian at Mount Mary College. After spending a period of semi-retirement at Hartford, WI, Sister retired at Notre Dame of Elm Grove in 1986 where she still used her library skills.

Sister Adelle was always gracious, hospitable, and sociable. She was most noted for her spirit of gratitude. For her family, her education, her superiors, and her retreats, she wrote, "I thank you God, and the School Sisters of Notre Dame." On her death bed, not having spoken for days, when a sister blessed her, she suddenly spoke, "Thank you, thank you, thank you." Now Sister Adelle has all eternity to utter her "thank you" to her loving God.
