Grandpa Jim was a man who liked his routines. He woke up at the crack of dawn to work as a concrete truck driver. Don’t ever call concrete “cement” or you will get a very long lecture about how cement is just the “binding agent.”

He often ate steak, potatoes, and radishes for dinner while his wife Patricia ate her fish and vegetables. Jim had a “secret” candy drawer below his bed filled with Whoppers, Milk Duds, and licorice. When having his usual breakfast at a diner nearby, he always left the keys in the car and kept the heater running so we could return to a warm & toasty vehicle.

His Greek restaurant “Mantzoros Restaurant and Lounge” was a huge success in town. His daughters loved their times as waitresses, dishwashers, cooks, and bartenders there. In addition to the restaurant, he had a very successful snow plowing business for many years. Toward the end of his life, he started yet another small business: “Jim Mantzoros’ Handyman Services.”

As you have read, throughout the years, he was always a business owner. Jim would drive around materials to give to moms who lived in Island Lake to make slippers and potholders. He would drop off the stuff and then pick them up. The ladies were very happy to work from home. The very special June Newman was one of those ladies.

Along with being a hard-working entrepreneur, Jim volunteered a lot, especially for the Island Lake branch of the Wauconda Fire Department. He was also active in the Kiwanas and in the American Legion.

He was very helpful after the tornado hit Island Lake for rebuilding, helping people who lost homes (including us), and for future safety of the people of Island Lake. He was instrumental in adding the siren that blasts every month to this very day.
