John was the eldest son of Alexander Stewart and unknown wife.

He was the first of his immediate family to come to America, in 1745, some years before the others. He settled in the Chestnut Level Area, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania where his grandmother Catherine Montgomery Stewart Calhoun was living.

He became a clerk of the court in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania where he stayed and raised a family.

John's father and 5 brothers stayed in Chestnut Level Area of Lancaster Co. with John until they moved to York District, South Carolina.
