Aviation Cadet J. S. Martinek, USNR, was designated Naval Aviator #5049 in 1937. Entered service via the pre-war Aviation Cadet (AVCAD) prgoram. Left active service in 1939 to join TWA as a pilot. Then joined North American Aircraft Corp., Calif. as a pilot.

Was one of six pilots on a ferry flight to Canada, to deliver T-6 training planes. Due to bad weather crashed into the side of Mount Tipton in NW Az.

Survived by his father Joseph, of Warren, OH; his wife, the former Miss Dorothy Mae Thompson; and sister, Mrs. J. H. Kimmel.
