DIED:

HOWLETT - In this city, Sunday morning, February 22d, 1880, after a short illness, Major S. R. Howlett; aged 72 years.

Deceased was a native of the State of New York, and was among the early pioneers to California, whence he removed to Lewiston in the northern part of Idaho in the early settlement of that section. He remained at Lewiston until after theremoval of the Capital of the Territory from that place to Boise City, when he removed here, and was soon after appointed Secretary of the Territory. After his term of service was Secretary he engaged in business here and has resided here ever since. He leaves two sons who are somewhere in California, and a daughter, Mrs. E. C. Sterling, who resides in San Francisco.

Maj. Howlett was a veritable pioneer, who contributed his full share with others in settling this new country and redeeming it from the wilderness which he found it. Peace to his ashes.
