Fred was the son of William Herron b 11 Oct 1853 and d 3 Feb 1927 and Frances Ellen Sherman Herron b 23 Mar 1859 and d 5 Jun 1922. He was the youngest son of twelve children. The family had moved to Porter County from Hocking County, Ohio. Fred was born on the family farm in Porter Co. Ind. He attended school through the eighth grade and worked on the family farm until he joined the Army in 1917. He was preparing to be sent overseas when the Armistice was declared. Fred then took a job with United States Steel in Gary. Fred worked as a carpenter then in plant protection at U.S. Steel for his entire working life. He married Ida Bertha Schoenrock b 3 Jul 1901 in April of 1927. They bought a home in Gary, Indiana. During the depression, Ida worked in a factory while Fred (who had been laid off) stayed at home with their first child, Dolores Ann b 12 Jan 1929. They came very close to losing their home during the depression. Their second child, Allan Delano, was b 1 Jun 1934. Fred and Ida belonged to the Grace Methodist Church in Glen Park and Fred was a avid Chicago Cubs fan. He was also a life long member of the Gary American Legion Post 214. After Ida died (3 Feb 1951)Fred remarried (22 Aug 1954)to a childhood friend, Mildred Rasor Ketchmark. They lived in Gary until Fred retired in 1961, when they moved to Fred's sister Elsie's farm in Porter Co., where Fred had a large garden and worked on the farm until Elsie's death in 1982. He and Mildred then moved to a mobile home in Valparaiso where they lived until Fred died 9 Oct 1986 at 89 years of age. Fred had survived a number of health crises, but finally succmbing to congestive heart failure. He is buried next to Ida at Graceland Cememtery, Valparaiso, Indiana. Fred and Mildred belonged to the First Christian Church of Valpariso.
