Lt. Commander Wilkinson first enlisted in the United States Navy in August of 1940. He quickly rose through the enlisted ranks to Chief Yeoman and in July of 1951 was promoted an Officer to Ensign in the Navy. He eventually retired in March of 1964 as a Lt. Commander after 24 years of service to the Navy. He saw sea duty on the USS Emerald PYc-1 and the USS Jeffers DMS-27. While aboard the USS Jeffers he was present during the assault and occupation of Okinawa and 3rd fleet operations against Japan. He was also present at Tokyo Bay during the formal surrender of Japan on 2 September 1945. He was awarded the Navy Good Conduct medal with 3rd reenlistment bar, American Defense Service medal with "Fleet" clasp, American Theater Campaign medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal with two service stars, and the World War II Victory medal.
