The funeral of Calvin L. Reed, who died Friday morning at the home of his son, P. C. Reed, near Reading, was held at the Reading M. E. Church Sunday afternoon, at 3 o’clock by Rev. Moore, pastor of the United Brethern [sic] Church, of Osage City, of which church Mr. Reed was a member. Rev. J. D. Bratton, of Reading, assisting. Mr. Reed’s home was for many years at Osage City, but for the past two years, has made his home with his son. He had been in failing health for several years, enduring much suffering during the past few weeks. Calvin L. Reed was born August 13, 1834, at Phillippi County, West Virginia, and died April 26, 1912, at Reading, Kan. He was married to Sarah Weyand, in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, August 14, 1856. His wife died July 11, 1884, and he was married again to Lucinda Wilbour, December 7, 1885. His wife, and one son, P. C. Reed, of Valley Falls, survive him. Mr. Reed joined the army as fifth sergeant of Captain Sevbrock’s company, 1st Provost Battalion, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served until the close of the war. He was a member of the G. A. R. Post of Osage City. Mr. Reed was converted to a Christian life and joined the Methodist Church when a young man, and was a member of the United Brethren Church, at Osage City at his death. The active pall-bearers were Charles D. Tucker, Joe Jones, T. V. Bailey, F. R. Connell, G. W. Watson and Emmet Carey. The honorary pall-bearers were from the G.A.R. Post of Osage City. A choir consisting of Messrs. R. Griffiths and Charles Schlobohm; and Mesdames D. Willis Jones, and A. C. Nickel and Miss Edna Bryan, furnished music for the service. One selection, “Oh, Come, Angel Band,” was a favorite song of Mr. Reed’s, which he sang frequently during his last illness. The interment was made in the Reading Cemetery. A number of friends from Osage City attended the funeral Sunday.
