She grew to womanhood in England and was united in marriage to Joseph Cherry March 15, 1856, he having preceded her to the better land just one year and five days. They sailed for America in June of the same year and landed in New York on the 11th of July. They first located at Downer's Grove, ILlinois, where they lived for seven years, moving from there to Central City, Iowa, where they lived for two years. They then moved to the present home in Spring Grove township, where they lived for more than fifty years.
Mother Cherry was a charter member of Willow Rebekah Lodge and remained a loyal and faithful member until her death. Being of such a bright and sunny disposition she always had a word of cheer and a smile for everyone. She was one of the best loved members of her home lodge and was often referred to as mother of the lodge. This same feeling existed in the home and among the neighbors in the surrounding country for her cheering words of advice were always in demand and freely given. Mrs. Cherry leaves to mourn her loss two sons and four daughters, Arthur, of Sidney, Montana; Charles, of Spring Grove Township; Gertie Workman, of Ryan; Laura Elliott of Cedar Rapids; Lillie Metcalf, of Drake, North Dakota; and Lucy Nelson on the home farm. Three children having preceded her to the better land. Besides these she leaves thirty-five grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, four sisters, and three brothers. One sister, Mrs. J.G. Cherry, living in Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Lucy Beistle and Burgess Miles, of Buchanan, Michigan, and two brothers and two sisters in England. Her children all arrived in time to greet her before she died except Mrs. Lillie Metcalf, who was delayed by railroad conditions. Mrs. J.G. Cherry was called to Arizona by the illness of a son and was not able to attend the funeral. Funeral services were conducted from the old home Tuesday afternoon at 1:30, conducted by Rev. Thos. Maxwell, and the body laid to rest beside her husband in the Troy Mills Cemetery. Willow Rebekah Lodge had charge of the services at the grave. Those in attendance at the funeral from a distance in addition to the children were: Walter, Howard, and Misses Agatha and Nellie Cherry; A. C. Cherry and wife; Ed Cherry and wife; Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Van Duzer, of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Elmer Walton, of Kenwood Park; Herbert Cherry, of Tama; Robert Miles, of Meriden, Iowa; Charles Roland and daughter, Mrs. Frederickson, of Fairbury Nebraska.
