Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Dotson Murphy, 87, retired registered nurse and long-time resident of Mooresville Pike, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at Morning Pointe Assisted Living. A memorial service will be conducted Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Ephesus Church of Christ with James Farris, Mrs. Murphy's nephew, officiating. Private interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols. Memorials may be made to Maury Regional Medical Center Foundation, 1224 Trotwood Avenue, Columbia 38401 or to the Cyril Evers Building at the King's Daughters' School Autism Center, 412 West 9th Street, Columbia 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. The Giles County native was the daughter of the late George Washington Dotson and Emma Louise Pillow Dotson. She was a graduate of Giles County High School and earned her degree in Nursing from King's Daughters' School of Nursing. During World War II, she spent her time at the Navy bases where her husband was stationed in Eastport, Maine and Alameda, California. She began her career at King's Daughters Hospital; continued with Maury County Hospital, and retired as Evening Supervisor of Nursing at Maury Regional Hospital. She was a member of Ephesus Church of Christ. She was married in 1944 to Harold William Murphy, Sr. who preceded her in death December 31, 1976. Survivors include a daughter, Betty Jean Murphy (Donald) Flowers of Columbia; a son, Harold William (Mary Jean) Murphy, Jr. of Columbia; grandchildren, Rachel Elizabeth Murphy (Matt) Williams of Atlanta, Susanna Grace Murphy of Nashville, Harold William (Gabriella) Murphy, III of Memphis, Joshua Daniel (Kate) Flowers of Memphis, Joel Ramsey (Mary Anne) Flowers of Chattanooga, and Adam Murphy (Sara Jane) Flowers of Nashville; great-grandchildren, Olivia Grace Murphy and Aaron William Murphy, both of Memphis, Charlotte Jane Flowers and Caroline Elizabeth Flowers, both of Nashville; special nieces, Dorothy Mason of Ft. Worth, Texas, Kitty Chaffin of Columbia, Judy Voss of Columbia, Irene Richardson of Kinelon, New Jersey. Pallbearers are Joshua Flowers, Joel Flowers, Adam Flowers, Will Murphy, Matt Williams, Wayne Voss, Tommy Farris, Frank Murphy, David Farris, Steve Meservy.
